YEAHBUTT.COM

Documenting the North American Yeahbutt since it was documenting us.
DAYS SINCE LAST CONFIRMED FEEDING: 0  (it is always 0)
Case File 001 - Open Since 1847

You have never seen one.
You have absolutely fed one.

The North American Yeahbutt (Yeahbuttus vulgaris) is the most successful cryptid on this continent, and the least photographed, because it does not hide in forests. It hides in sentences. Distant cousin of the jackalope. Diet: excuses, exclusively. Every "yeah but" spoken aloud is a full meal.

Bigfoot has 10,000 blurry photos. The Yeahbutt has something better: an eyewitness in every household in America, and not one of them will admit what they saw themselves say.

Known weakness: cannot survive hearing its excuse named aloud, followed by ownership. Documented kill phrase: "That one is on me." Drops them where they stand.

Alleged Yeahbutt, Williston area, moments after a crew member said the paperwork could wait. Photographer declined to be named. Photographer also declined to do the paperwork.

Every documented feeding call, paired with its capture phrase. Searchable. Long on purpose. Yours is in here, statistically.

The Historical Record

Assembled from journals, clippings, memoranda, and one plaster cast, by researchers who should probably have been doing something else. Presented without apology and without much verification.

ARTIFACT 1847-A - EMIGRANT JOURNAL, OREGON TRAILRecovered near Fort Laramie

June the 14th, 1847. Hollis swore we would ford the river before the rains and yet here we sit. When pressed he said Yeah but the oxen looked tired, and I confess I saw the strangest thing: a fat little beast with horns like a young hare sat upon our water barrel the whole time he spoke, and it seemed to grow stouter with each word. When Mrs. Pruett said plainly that the delay was on all of us and we would cross at dawn regardless, the creature gave a squeak like a wet boot and was gone. Hollis maintains it was a prairie dog. Prairie dogs do not have antlers, Hollis.

"EXCUSE VARMINT" VEXES COUNTY FARMERS. Farmers in the northern townships report a peculiar creature loitering near unplanted fields and unmended fences. Witnesses describe a pot-bellied animal resembling "a jackalope that gave up," which appears whenever a man explains why a thing is not yet done. Amos Verger of Painted Woods claims the beast has attended every conversation about his barn roof since the spring of 1889. The roof remains unmended. The creature remains fat. A traveling naturalist has offered the sum of four dollars for a specimen, but notes that no trap has succeeded, as the creature cannot be baited with anything except a reason it will surely work next time.

ARTIFACT 1923-F - NORTHERN PACIFIC RAILWAY, FOREMAN'S LETTERMandan Yards

Mr. Duquesne,

Regarding the coupling inspection that was not performed on the 9th. I asked Brakeman REDACTED why it was skipped and he said, and I am quoting the man direct, "Yeah but we always done her that way and she has always held." I wish to report that while he said it, a gray creature of considerable girth was SITTING DIRECTLY ON THE COUPLING in question, wearing what I can only describe as a satisfied expression. No man would approach the coupling while it sat there, which I note is the entire problem in miniature.

The coupling held. This time. The creature knows it too.

AMERICA WORKS WHEN EXCUSES DO NOT EAT FIRST
A fed excuse is a fat excuse. Do the thing. - Federal Art Project, District 7

Curator's note: District 7 records contain no approval for this poster. The artist, when asked who authorized it, reportedly began a sentence with "yeah but" and then stopped himself in visible terror.

AND IT ATE THEIR TOMORROWS!
"THE YEAHBUTT THAT ATE TOMORROW"

In TERRIFYING black and white. Featuring a creature costume the studio insisted was "mostly to scale." Banned in three counties for reasons the counties never got around to writing down.

ARTIFACT 1972-G - THE HIDDEN FAUNA QUARTERLY, VOL. IXField Notes column

Members will recall our expedition to cast the famous "footprints" reported at the Beulah job site. We must now publish a correction that has divided this newsletter's staff: they are not footprints. The casts, twenty-two inches across, nearly circular, paired... are SEAT PRINTS. The creature does not leave tracks, colleagues. It leaves evidence of prolonged sitting, always adjacent to unfinished work. We have taken plaster casts of eleven such impressions. The largest was found beside a half-built deck that three witnesses independently described as "basically done since '68."

RE: The thing in the break room

Several of you have reported a "large tan animal" near the coffee machine during Monday pipeline reviews. Facilities has confirmed it is real and has asked me to remind everyone that it arrived the same quarter we started explaining the numbers with "yeah but the market." Legal advises we cannot call it an infestation because it is technically only eating things we say. Please route all excuses through your manager, who is on a diet.

>>> WARNING!!! If you hear yourself say "yeah but the computers will all be down in January anyway" a CREATURE grows ONE SIZE. This is REAL, my cousin's coworker SAW ONE at a Y2K readiness meeting sitting on the UNREAD BINDER. Forward this to TEN people or the creature gets your New Years resolution too. (It gets it either way. Forward anyway.) <<<

Archive note: this chain letter has proven more accurate than most journalism of the period.

ARTIFACT 2026-K - INCIDENT REVIEW EXCERPT + FIRST CONFIRMED PREDATOR OBSERVATIONLocation withheld

Near-miss review, elevated work. Interviewee initially stated: "Yeah but the paperwork takes longer than the job." Reviewer documented an unidentified gray-brown animal of significant size settling onto the gate of the truck as this was said. Interviewee then paused, and stated for the record: "No. That one is on me. I skipped the tie-off check."

What happened next is the reason this office now has a second case file. Witnesses describe a low, striped animal emerging from beneath the trailer "like it had been waiting there since the invention of excuses," consuming the deflating Yeahbutt in a single unhurried bite, nodding once at the interviewee, and departing. When a witness asked what it was, the animal reportedly replied, in full violation of everything this Institute understands about badgers:

"On it."

- Case File 002: ONNIT. Status: open, and frankly, hopeful.

The Evidence Locker

Physical proof, as physical as it gets for a creature made of sentences.

Exhibit A

The Beulah Seat Casts

Eleven plaster casts of near-circular paired impressions, each found adjacent to unfinished work. The Yeahbutt does not leave footprints. It leaves seat prints. This tells you everything about its lifestyle and most things about its diet.

Exhibit B

Audio Recordings

Over 14,000 hours of confirmed Yeahbutt feeding calls captured in meeting rooms, garages, and gyms nationwide. The call is unmistakable: a human voice, rising slightly, producing the phrase "yeah but" followed by anything at all.

Exhibit C

The Absence Files

Our strongest evidence is everything that never happened: the decks half-built, the calls not returned, the January gym memberships. Skeptics call this "just human nature." We invite skeptics to explain why human nature has a seat print.

Field Identification

Six confirmed regional variants. All share the body plan: pear-shaped, bottom-heavy, antler nubs, googly eyes, tail tuft. Cute. Reasonable-looking. That is the trap. Excuses always look reasonable.

The Common Yeahbutt

Feeds on: anything. Tell: appears the moment a task is agreed to. Kill phrase: "That one is on me."

The Gonna

Feeds on: "I was gonna." Tell: frozen mid-first-step, one shoe on, forever. Kill phrase: starting within ten seconds.

The Blamethrower

Feeds on: "he started it." Tell: two huge pointing arms, anatomically unable to point at itself. Kill phrase: "I pick what I do."

The Made-Me

Feeds on: "you made me mad." Tell: offers you puppet handles with strings attached to nothing. They are never attached. Kill phrase: "Nobody drives my mood but me."

The One-More-Minute

Feeds on: snooze buttons, one more episode. Tell: clock belly stuck at 11:59 forever. Kill phrase: feet on the floor.

The Always-Done-It

Feeds on: "we always done it that way." Tell: oldest and fattest of the species; sits directly on the tie-off point. Kill phrase: "Hands go home whole." This one is not funny. This one has a bone pile.

A note on the dangerous ones. Most Yeahbutts eat chores. A few eat people. The variants that whisper "yeah but everyone does it," "yeah but you already said yes once," "yeah but if you cared you would" are classified separately by this Institute, taken seriously, and hunted without humor. If one of those is feeding near you, that is not a t-shirt situation: tell someone you trust. The creature's rule still holds and always will: it can whisper, it cannot force, and it dies in honest light.

The Yeahbutt Field Research Institute

Founded whenever we get around to it. Headquartered wherever the work is not getting done.

We are a loose confederation of foremen, parents, teachers, counselors, and one extremely patient badger, documenting the only cryptid that everyone has personally fed. Our research standard is simple and absolute, and it is the entire reason this Institute exists:

Tenet One

People HAVE Yeahbutts. People are never Yeahbutts. We study the creature, never the keeper. Anyone using this work to call a human being a Yeahbutt is doing it wrong and owes the Institute a dollar.

Tenet Two

Yeahbutts whisper. They never force. "It made me" is the one lie the species tells. Everything else about your situation can be true and hard and unfair, and the next move is still yours.

Tenet Three

The kill is always free. No equipment, no license, no season, no bag limit. Name the excuse, own the next move. Works in a boardroom, a classroom, a man camp, and a minivan.

Tenet Four

Catching yourself IS the trophy. The Institute awards no points for never having fed one, because nobody qualifies. We award everything for the moment you hear yourself, stop, and say the words.
