THE COMMON YEAHBUTT

Yeahbuttus vulgaris - color it, then do NOT feed it
EATS: excuses  |  AFRAID OF: "That one is on me!"  |  LOOKS: cute (that is the trap)
This Yeahbutt is trying to eat an excuse! Write the excuse it wants in big letters:
Now write the MAGIC WORDS that shrink it:

THE GONNA

Frozen mid-first-step with one shoe on... FOREVER
EATS: "I was gonna..."  |  AFRAID OF: starting anything for ten seconds
The Gonna has been "about to start" since before you were born. What is something YOU are gonna do?
Do ten seconds of it right after coloring. That is how you shrink a Gonna. Check when done:
I did my ten seconds. The Gonna squeaked.

THE ONE-MORE-MINUTE

Its clock belly is stuck at 11:59 forever. It never strikes anything.
EATS: "one more video!"  |  AFRAID OF: feet on the floor
Color the creature, then draw hands on YOUR bedtime on this clock face. What time do screens go night-night at your house?
Say it with us: "Feet on the floor, screen goes night-night!" Now decorate its nightcap.

ONNIT THE BADGER

The only creature Yeahbutts fear. Appears when someone says the magic words.
EATS: Yeahbutts (only)  |  SAYS: "On it."  |  PERSONALITY: extremely calm
Onnit's stripes are his badge. Color him, then practice his whole vocabulary out loud:
(It is two words. You know them. Say them like a very calm badger.)

THE GROWN-UP PAGE

One page, everything you need, no training required

What this is: the Yeahbutt is a friendly critter that eats excuses. Kids spot it, name it, say "that one is on me," and do one tiny next thing. That is the entire system. It works because pointing at a creature is easy and pointing at yourself is hard, and because you cannot say "Yeahbutt" without smiling.

The one rule that cannot break

Kids HAVE Yeahbutts. Kids are never Yeahbutts. Never use the creature as a gotcha ("you're feeding a Yeahbutt again") - the moment it becomes a punishment word, the whole tool dies. The creature is always the excuse. The kid is always the researcher.

What works with this age (field-tested mechanics)

K-2 vs 3-5

K-2: keep it gentle and silly - the creature is basically real to them, so it is never scary, never in their room at night, and always shrinkable by them. 3-5: they are in on the joke and will love the field-guide taxonomy, latin names, and discovering new species. Both ages: catching yourself is ALWAYS praised, never punished, including the four-hundredth time.

If a sighting gets heavy

Sometimes the creature gets words out of a kid that careful questions never could. If what a child reports is bigger than chores and screens: listen first, freak out never, thank them for telling you, and follow your school's reporting process. The creature opened the door - your calm is what keeps it open.
